Taxes

There’s a lot of different types of taxes in Australia, and all of them are equally important, but for now, let’s take a look at five of them.

1. Individual income tax. The IIT rate varies depending on the taxpayer category: Australian residents, foreign residents, children under 18 years of age, and Australian Working Holiday visa residents. Moreover, for each of the categories, the tax rate depends on the amount of income.

2. Corporate income tax. The standard corporate income tax rate is 30%, while the reduced rate is 27.5%. Companies that do not qualify for a reduced tax rate and have cumulative turnover in excess of the designated thresholds are taxed at a rate of 30%.

3. Withholding tax, which is levied at several rates: 10% for interest payments; 30% on taxable dividends and royalties. The above rates do not apply if the payment is made to a resident of a country with which Australia has an agreement to avoid double taxation and such agreement provides for lower rates.

4. VAT in Australia is called Goods & Sales Tax and is payable on the sale of most goods and services and its rate is 10%. An important role in reporting on VAT issues in Australia is played by the VAT registration procedure. There are voluntary mandatory registration procedures.

5. Land tax, which is based on the total value of the property. Moreover, a lot also depends on the state in which it is located since state laws differ. Land tax is a levy that landowners pay annually.

Education

From 6 to 12 years old, children study in Primary School, then four years in Junior Secondary and from 16 to 17 years in Senior Secondary, and after that, they receive a Higher School Certificate.

After school and before entering the university, students have the opportunity to get a specialty in college. Colleges are divided into public and private. State ones, united in the TAFE (Technical and Further Education) system, are considered the most prestigious. Training lasts on average 1-2 years, after which the student has a diploma and a practice specialty. As a rule, this is a profession in the field of accounting, management, industry, navigation, etc. Upon graduation, the student has a choice: go to work or continue their education, college graduates are enrolled in the university immediately for the second year (in some cases, for the third). Tuition at TAFE College costs an average of 10,000 USD per year, both for locals and foreigners.

Australian universities are traditionally ranked in the top 50 worldwide. Australia is an international country, here they are accustomed to emigrants, in particular, to foreign students. There are no special conditions for applicants from abroad - everyone enters on a common basis. Australian universities accept applicants twice a year: in February and September, the academic year begins at the end of February, it is divided into two semesters, each of which ends with an examination session. Higher education in Australia is paid, the cost ranges from 18,000-24,000 USD per year, depending on the chosen specialty.

Healthcare

State health insurance - Medicare - is available to citizens of the country, refugees, and immigrants with a permanent visa, which is funded by the Mandatory Medicare Levy Tax (exceptions are physiotherapy, manual therapy, and dentistry). Even if there is only one worker in the family, the insurance applies to all other family members. Low-income families, retirees, students, and unemployed are exempt from health care tax.

Private doctors are allowed to set premiums for their services, so their cost is higher than the official ones set by the state. Medicare will reimburse 85% of the official cost of treatment. The remaining 15% and the surcharge established by the clinic will have to be paid from your wallet.

Some private doctors work on a direct payment system (Bulk Billing) - they assist by the official rates, so you won’t pay extra. They register the patient's Medicare card number, and after medical care is provided, the doctor sends the bill to the Medicare office and receives payment.

Private Health Insurance Private companies offer insurance for any occasion and these services can also be obtained in public hospitals, but this will take several months to wait for your turn. The cost of the insurance policy depends on the insurance company.

The country's government is encouraging residents to ensure their health in private companies to reduce the burden on the state budget. Medicare holders who do not have private health insurance and whose annual income is exceeding the limit are subject to an additional 1% tax surcharge on their health care tax.
